opposites attract

yesterday i was in quite a thought-provoking conversation. it was regarding relationships. the other person whom i highly esteem stated a general statement along the lines of: liking someone who is more opposite than similar to you. the logic behind this, is that the easiest thing for a person to do is love him/herself. thus loving someone who is just like you is easy...it's similar to loving yourself. also, liking someone with similar interests and hobbies brings with it competition. competing for the attention that comes with having the better poem, if the shared interest is writing or the better tasting cookie, if the shared hobby is baking. so instead of the needed encouragement there is selfish criticism. hmm...i suppose those old sayings hold much truth to them...opposites do attract.
